Bow Schools

Tower Hamlets, London

Rationalising and re-ordering the accommodation of two inner city schools on adjacent sites within the Tredegar Square conservation area was the impetus behind this BSF project for Bouygues and London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Phoenix School, which takes pupils from nursery to sixth form, has now a new entrance and sixth form building. Turning the Rights of Light profile to advantage, stepped terraces are given over to horticulture, while a new linear core adjoins and gives flexibility to the existing building.

Central School’s motley buildings have been selectively replaced and refurbished. The result locates most of it on one site, though with separate location and identity for its sixth form and community-based activities, more space for sport and a landmark main entrance building with direct access to the school’s specialist areas.
